Tom Clancy’s The Division – Breaking Records at Ubisoft!

Without much surprise, following the anticipated hype-train that is “The Division”, Ubisoft announced today that the most anticipated game of 2016 is already breaking records.
Ubisoft claim that they have sold more copies of The Division in its first 24 hours than any other game in Ubisoft history. This also includes single-day company records across Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

“The launch of The Division is a tremendous achievement for Ubisoft, and demonstrates our unrivaled capacity to create fantastic new game brands and transform them into entertainment blockbusters,” said Yves Guillemot, co-founder and CEO, Ubisoft. “This is a momentous day for Ubisoft, but more importantly it marks the start of millions of players’ enduring engagement in The Division’s game world, which we are confident they will love.”

This comes after much relief for Ubisoft who needed a tough break after their Assassin’s Creed Unity Initial Launch Disaster that left customers with the PC version disheartened after they’ve realized they cannot run their game, no matter what they did. This poor level of optimization for PC made many potential customers for The Division wary of first day purchasing.

Speculation that The Division were also going to be a poorly optimized game were high, especially since the hype for this release was substantially higher than Assassin’s Creed Unity. If not poor optimization, what about server capabilities?

As it turned out, Tom Clancy’s The Division did have a server upset; many players including streaming developers could not connect to play after the initial release; despite developers running two beta tests of the game in advance, in which they realized the demand of players they needed to cater for.

Initially access to the beta was guaranteed to everyone who had preordered the game, or had a game key, but as the beta folded out Ubisoft struggled to meet the demand, and to cater for more players; extended the beta for another 24 hours.

Loyal players expected that the result of the beta testing and the potential of players who were ready to jump in and play were expected, and that the servers would be optimized for the large player base it was about to cater for.

Nevertheless the sheer amount of players connecting to Tom Clancy’s The Division Servers at once were unprecedented, fortunately servers were operating within a few hours across all platforms, and Ubisoft collected a win.

Overall, the future for The Division looks very bright! Would not be surprising to see this a contender for Game of the Year.
